Imagination Library

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is now available in Pitt County!

Reading aloud to babies and young children promotes bonding and pre-literacy skills, grows vocabulary and builds connections in the brain that prepare children for success in school and life.

Imagination Library is for EVERY child. Enroll your infant, toddler or preschooler by visiting Imagination Library.

Currently, only about half of incoming kindergarteners meet the benchmarks for early literacy. Third graders in Pitt County are below the statewide average in reading proficiency. We want to change that!

We have learned that if we want children reading proficiently by 3rd grade, it is crucial that they enter school ready to learn. We know that children are born ready to learn. In fact, 90% of critical brain development happens the first five years of life. We can not wait until kindergarten, brain research tells us that is much too late. The first months and years of life set the stage for everything else to come.

Home library size has a significant impact and is strongly linked to academic success. This goes for all families – of all education and occupation levels. Regardless of how many books the family already has, each addition to the home library helps children do better in school. A home library with as few as 25 books makes a difference. Children with as few as 25 books in the home complete an average of two more years of schooling than those with no books.

Imagine what Pitt County will look like when every kindergartener arrives to schools with a home library of at least 60 books. Together, we can make the future much brighter for Pitt County citizens.

Imagination Library is the first step in changing the statistics in Pitt County. Imagination Library is made possible by the generosity of our corporate and individual sponsors; people just like you! It only costs $30 per child per year or $150 for a child to receive a book a month for the first five years of their life, that's a home library of 60 books!
