History
Fifty Years of Caring
It was exactly 50 years ago when 30 citizens got together to start the Pitt County United Fund. The first campaign to raise money for community needs netted a whopping $89,958 and funded 12 local agencies - not bad by 1958 standards. In 1980, the organization changed its name to Pitt County United Way to align with the national organization, United Way of America.
Known as the United Way of Pitt County since 1991, the organization has grown in strength and stature through the years. UWPC raised $1.9 million in its 2007 campaign and now serves 43,000 individuals in need through 19 programs. Many changes have taken place over the last 50 years, but one thing has stayed the same: a tradition of caring, of neighbors helping neighbors.
United Way of Pitt County is a volunteer-driven, nonprofit organization that brings together community volunteers and health and human-service agencies to improve the lives of local residents. Your gift supports a vital safety net of agencies and programs that work together to strengthen our community.
United Way of Pitt County is a member of the United Way of America, located in Alexandria, Virginia. United Way of America is an independent, national organization that serves United Way of Pitt County and approximately 1,400 other United Ways across the country.
